To assist you in purchasing your first games, Neo Geo Kult has established a TOP 10 of the titles offering the best value for money ratio for the Neo Geo AES. Here they are, make your choice!
1. FATAL FURY SPECIAL - 15 EUROS
The price/quality ratio here is similar to Samurai Spirits II, while the styles are a little different: Fatal Fury Special is a real gem of old-school fighting games, it is neither more nor less than the great rival of Super Street Fighter II!
2. SAMURAI SPIRITS II - 20 EUROS
Here's one of the best episodes of the legendary saga from SNK, a must-have: Seventeen selectable characters, an impressive realization for a game of 1994, and of course a taking and full gameplay, with a high difficulty.
3. THE KING OF FIGHTERS 94 - 30 EUROS
The first installment of The King of Fighters saga is certainly not the larger or the best, but still a great classic episode, and also the cheapest of the series. The roster is already plentiful and gameplay rich with combos and special moves!
4. ART OF FIGHTING 2 - 15 EUROS
It's without a doubt the best episode of Art of Fighting. An impressive realization, an original gameplay, but a very, very high difficulty... Will you accept the challenge?
5. WORLD HEROES 2 - 15 EUROS
Again, probably the best episode of ADK's saga. A quite unknown fighting game that deserves a visit, with its 14 characters, Deathmatch and unique atmosphere.
6. MAGICIAN LORD - 40 EUROS
Ok, for the fighting games, we are served. How about a good arcade-platform game? Magician Lord is the best of its kind on Neo Geo, with its world of fantasy and fabulous musics.
7. ALPHA MISSION II - 40 EUROS
Good shooters of the Neo Geo are usually pretty expensive, but here is the best compromise between price/pleasure: Alpha Mission II! Technical, futuristic, old-school at will: a bomb!
8. BLUE'S JOURNEY - 30 EUROS
Another excellent platform-game, that can be played in co-op, beautiful, long and fun! In a spirit looking more like Super Mario, this ADK game is an excellent investment.
9. GHOST PILOTS - 40 EUROS
Featuring the planes of World War II, GP is the second Shoot them Up next to ASO II to provide a good quality/price ratio: there's better on the system, but it is (much) more expensive!
10. KING OF FIGHTERS 98 - 80 EUROS
Definitely the best game on this list, but also the most expensive: choose staying within your budget deprives you of other games, but ... fun and life of Kof 98 are worth it!
This TOP 10 excludes many excellent titles and it might surprise some of our readers: it's for the simple reason that these games are dispensable, given the list we have above. Here are some more that may deserve your attention anyway!
- Fatal Fury 2 is partly outdated compared to Fatal Fury Special, which is an improved version ... and costs about the same price!
- Samurai Spirits first of the name is a sublime production, a bit more expensive than its successor (30 euros). It offers a little less characters but different backgrounds and an unique atmosphere ... Certainly a good choice, but out of the Top 10.
- Games of the series The King of Fighters, for most of them in their japanese versions, are quite affordable . Kof 94 is the cheapest, 98 is the most perfect, and between those are different opus, packing various atmospheres and variations that will attract many players: all are very good games, so never hesitate if the price is attractive!
- Art of Fighting is less complete and impressive than its successor, and significantly more expensive (30 euros). However, the atmosphere here is unique.
- Nam-1975 is an action game, mixing Run'n'Gun and Shoot them Up action à la Cabal, particularly successfully. This is the very first game released on the Neo Geo, but it still looks good and feels very addictive: all this for forty euros in Euro/U.S version...
- Games such as Super Sidekicks, Fatal Fury 3, Samurai Spirits III or Karnov's Revenge remain within a range of affordable titles, usually sold for 50/60 euros. These games are excellent choices once you have toured the essentials of the Top 10!
